IDELIX Receives $470,000 Contribution from Defence Research and Development Canada
Pliable Display Technology "Smart" lens research and development set into motion through the Defence Industrial Research Program

July 13, 2004 - Vancouver, British Columbia - IDELIX® Software Inc. announced today they have been awarded a $470,000 contribution by Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) through the Defence Industrial Research (DIR) Program. This contribution has been awarded to IDELIX for the research and development of the next generation of Pliable Display Technology (PDT), known as PDT "Smart" Lens Technology. IDELIX will be working closely with the Intelligence Information Management Group (J2 IM) of the Canadian Department of National Defence, and the DRDC locations in Valcartier, Toronto, and Ottawa.

"The Defence Industrial Research Program's partnerships between industry, the Department of National Defence and Defence R&D Canada are essential to developing new technologies that allow the Canadian Forces to meet their evolving roles and missions," said Douglas Laurie-Lean, Head, Defence Industrial Research Program. "These partnerships have produced breakthroughs in the innovation and the research and development of compelling and deployable technologies for both the defence and commercial markets. IDELIX will bring significant advances in the area of information visualization where they have already proven to be leaders."

The DRDC Defence Industrial Research (DIR) Program is designed to foster and support innovation in the Canadian Defence Industrial Base by providing financial and scientific support for industry-initiated research projects related to the defence of Canada. The ability to collaborate with multiple DRDC locations and the DND will allow PDT "Smart" Lens Technology to gain crucial defence industry input and feedback as they move through the research, to proof-of-concept stages, to the next generation of PDT.

"The mandate for PDT "Smart" Lens Technology is to create an intelligent user interface technology that makes the user's job easier and faster," says Dr. David Baar, CTO and Founder of IDELIX. "It doesn't add complexity in the form of more buttons and controls to fiddle with; it enables users to interact with data more intuitively and directly without spending time fine-tuning the data presentation. Research and development into PDT "Smart" Lens Technology, with support from this grant and interactions with DRDC, will extend IDELIX leadership in direct user interfaces. Collaboration with DRDC will allow IDELIX to gain crucial domain-specific feedback and expertise."

In addition to the DRDC, IDELIX is currently working with the Geospatial Intelligence Advancement Testbed (GIAT) group within the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's InnoVision Directorate, and is a partner in the Eastman Kodak Company and Intergraph consortium for the NGA's Softcopy Search Program. Pliable Display Technology is also being integrated within the Paragon Imaging ELT Series software and is already available in Boeing Autometric's KDSP and Softplotter products. Sponsored by J2 IM, PDT has most recently been integrated within Black Coral GIS, a new situational analysis tool that was showcased at the Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (JWID) Trials in June 2004.
