IDELIX Awarded US Patent 6,727,910 for inventions incorporated in Pliable Display Technology
IDELIX intellectual property protection strategy advances

June 15, 2004 - Vancouver, British Columbia - IDELIX® Software Inc., a leader in information visualization interfaces, is pleased to announce they have been granted US Patent # 6,727,910 "Method and System for Inversion of Detail-in-Context Presentations". The patent was issued on April 27, 2004, and is directly relevant to a method commonly referred to as the Pliable Display Technology "Undisplace" functionality. IDELIX has 23 additional patents pending in the United States and internationally.

"It's all about focus," says IDELIX advisor Bill Buxton, ex-Chief Scientist for Alias/Wavefront and SGI, and now the Principal and Founder of Buxton Design. "Too much data, too little displays, and hard to find information. And when you find it, you lose context. Until now. Until IDELIX's Pliable Display Technology. I knew how to use it before I ever saw it because it builds on all of the skills that I developed using traditional media. It shows respect for how I search, examine and understand complex visual information. This is the best form of innovation, what I call surprising obviousness. This patent is just another confirmation of the creativity that can come from a dynamic focused company. See? It is all about focus."

"Our portfolio of patents is based on numerous innovations over many years of research and development, and strengthens the position of IDELIX as the technological leader in advanced user interfaces for direct data interaction," said Dr. David Baar, Founder & CTO of IDELIX. "This latest patent is relevant to our unique "Undisplace" function, that enhances existing data editing and measurement functions, thereby enabling users to work with both precision and speed."

The "Undisplace" invention is one of the pillars of Pliable Display Technology. This is the method that enables the use of various host application tools within the PDT lens; any changes made within the PDT lens are transformed with precision back to the original "unlensed" coordinates. Undisplace has been tested within products developed by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, and results have indicated productivity gains of up to 20% for mapping production tasks such as vector data collection and quality control analysis. These gains are primarily due to "in-place" data interaction with less zoom and pan workflow interruptions. With PDT's Undisplace functionality, common work tools can now be used seamlessly through the PDT lens to perform tasks such as mark-up, measurement, change detection, targeting by forward observation, or feature extraction with less repetitive zooming and panning techniques, and improved situational awareness.

The computer graphics and human factors expertise of the IDELIX team have led to breakthrough innovation in focus + context visualization techniques. Pliable Display Technology is evolving beyond 2D applications to include new extensions to 3D volume data and JPEG2000 technologies to allow for progressive decompression and detail-on-demand presentation of complex data sets in bandwidth constraint scenarios. Ongoing research at IDELIX also includes the development of data-aware or "Smart" PDT lenses and the application of PDT to terrain data and video.

IDELIX is currently working with the Geospatial Intelligence Advancement Testbed (GIAT) group within the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's InnoVision Directorate, and is also a partner in the Eastman Kodak Company and Intergraph consortium for the NGA's Softcopy Search Program. Pliable Display Technology is currently being integrated within the Paragon Imaging ELT Series software and is already available in Boeing Autometric's KDSP and Softplotter products. PDT is also integrated within Black Coral GIS, a new situational analysis tool that will be showcased at the Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (JWID) Trials this month.

About IDELIX

IDELIX Software Inc. is a leading innovator in the area of information visualization. IDELIX is comprised of scientists with expertise in human factors engineering and high performance computer graphics, and is continuously expanding its innovative product and professional service offerings in advanced technology for multidimensional data exploration and interaction. Pliable Display Technology (PDT) is an immersive user interface (UI) designed by IDELIX to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of users interacting with complex data, including large imagery, motion imagery and other 2D and 3D geospatial data. PDT provides new capabilities for data fusion and direct data interaction, while improving situational awareness within the spatial limits of any display screen. Major opportunities for PDT exist in markets where visualization software plays a large role such as Imagery Intelligence, Mission Planning, Geospatial Analysis, CAD/CAM, Handheld/Wireless, and Mapping Production.
